Scottish Pearls at Alistir Wood Tait

Scottish freshwater pearls are most beautiful and yet rare gems which have been collected and treasured in Scotland since Roman times. They have a quality, colour and lustre that equals and often surpasses that of fine oriental pearls.

The Scottish pearl is obtained from a rather drab looking freshwater mussel known as margaretifera margaretifera whose shells are often to be seen cast flooding. Our pearls have been fished from the Tay, Spey, Morriston and other rivers of the highlands. The pearls are characterised by a variety of natural colours and distinctive shapes which make every stone unique and highly sought after.

Scottish pearls are delicate and should always be treated with care. Pearls should be washed periodically in a weak soap and water solution and stored in a cool place.

The Scottish freshwater mussel margaretifera margaretifera is a protected species and the pearls we sell were legally taken from the wild prior to 27th March 1991. All pearls are sold subject to a license issued to us by The Scottish Executive, Rural Directorate, Landscapes and Habitats Division.

We hope that your Scottish pearls will give you many years of pleasure.
